Knitting jumpers for homeless kids. Is acrylic yarn just as warm as pure wool?

I'm knitting for orphans and homeless children here in Aust. and in countries where winter temperatures are below zero. I can not afford to buy a lot of wool, but they also had recourse to fiction 8 ply acrylic doubled, while I can afford much more. Now, I was told it will not be very hot. Is this true? Ideas please ...........

A meld is probably better. Lion Brand makes a decent wool-blend called Reduce. It is relatively inexpensive here in the United States, so that you may have some luck with them. This is not the highest quality, of course ... but certainly economic.
