I have joined the ends by sewing and by sneering a slit in each end and threading my fabric strips through it, but I am wondering if anyone is successful at other methods. I know that someone out there must have different ideas!

Hi you can't wrinkle a rug that way.
You need to look up rug-hooking & you need to cut, long, rectangular strips made out of heavier cotton.
You might be capable to find a rug-hooking class but if you can't then just look for a book on it.
