Product Description

H'mong Batik: A Textile Adeptness from Laos celebrates the artistry of Blue H'mong women, as it is expressed in their batik. The painstaking methods by which they created ritual skirts, the importance of the skirts in the major lie events of confederation and death, and the bonds formed between women as one concern another are all explored with great sensitivity. Illustrations respect the achievements of individual batik artists, and a legend on the ancestry of batik adds a spiritual dimension.

This colorful, hands-on guide explores many different waxing and dyeing techniques, explaining how to fabricate beautiful flowers, trees, birds, animals, landscapes, and outline designs.

Can you explain to me the method of batik?

Wax (Javanese: malam) is applied to things of the clergy, before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of beeswax and paraffin. The beeswax will hold the fabric and the paraffin wax will be cracking, which is a characteristic of batik. When the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colors are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps.
